Florida Tree Diseases

Here in Florida, our trees face a multitude of threats from drought to flood, wind damage, lightning strikes, insects, fungus and bacteria. Some of these things can be mitigated by ongoing tree care, while others must be dealt with after the fact. The certified arborists at Mid Florida Tree Service have the training, expertise and experience to recognize the various diseases and insect infestations that might harm your trees, and will know the best way treat the tree, landscape or forest involved.

Some of the diseases to be on the lookout against are as follows:

Fusiform Rust:

Robert L. Anderson, USDA Forest Service, Bugwood.org

Fusiform Rust attacks pine trees in the south. It causes the type of gall shown in the picture. Notice the yellow pustules on the gall. This disease affects most Florida pine species.

Brown Spot Needle Blight:

USDA Forest Service - Region 8 - Southern , USDA Forest Service, Bugwood.org

Brown Spot Needle Blight is the most serious threat to the long leaf pine. It stunts or delays the growth in seedlings. You might notice small dots on the needles that vary in color from yellow, like straw, to light brown. When the needles die, the take on a scorched appearance.

Oak Wilt:

William M. Ciesla, Forest Health Management International, Bugwood.org

Oak wilt, as its name suggests, attacks our beloved oak trees, including Laurels and Live Oaks. It is caused by a fungus called Ceratocystis fagacearum and is commonly spread by adult sap beetles which pick up spores from one tree and contaminate a new tree when the spores enter the tree wounds inflicted by the beetles. This disease causes the tree to wilt and die. Contact us immediately if you see signs of oak wilt.

Annosus Root Disease:

Paul A. Mistretta, USDA Forest Service, Bugwood.org Heterobasidion annosum is another fungus that threatens our trees. This one targets pines. It usually attacks through an existing wound and can lead to loss of growth or tree death.

Of course, these are only a few of the many diseases that our trees face.

Regular inspection and preventative care for your trees keeps them healthy, beautiful and safe. If there's something that doesn't look right in your trees, if it's dropping leaves / needles or branches or you see outward signs of scaring or leaking sap, call Mid Florida Tree Service.
