Get Results You Can See With Our Demossing Services

Spanish and ball moss, actually types of bromeliads, don't do any harm to healthy trees but on occasion need to be removed or thinned if there is a large amount. When providing demossing service, Mid-Florida Tree Service, Inc hand picks the moss to limit the risk and damage to the tree. Just a portion of moss is removed, rather than picking all of it, for the overall health of the tree. Attempting to completely remove the moss is too likely to harm the tree. Picking by hand provides immediate results. Spraying takes time! First, you have to wait for the moss to die, then to eventually fall out, leaving a mess on your lawn.

About Local Moss Varieties

A common point of contention is it a wildflower or weed. Bromeliads native to Florida seem to spark the same fiery debate. People either love it or hate it. It's native to the area, so it's as natural as the laurel oaks and live oaks that often host them. They've had this relationship long before people were around with opinions.

Understand More About Moss

Just like the wildflower / weed controversy, some landowners find these plants to be an attractive addition to their trees and others think it's an eyesore, and would go to nearly any length to eradicate it. One must take into account however the fact that unlike mistletoe, which is a parasite, Spanish and ball moss are epiphytes. These types of moss only put in enough root to anchor themselves and do not take nutrients away from the host. In a healthy tree, epiphyte growth will be limited by the shade of the canopy which limits the photosynthesis available to the guest plant.

The Need to Remove Unwanted Moss

A tree that is already in distress might experience overgrowth of Spanish Moss that needs to be thinned to allow the host tree a chance to recover. We discourage Spanish moss (bromeliad epiphyte) removal when it's just for aesthetics. The removal process can damage the tree. In those rare situations where Spanish moss removal is the best option, Mid-Florida Tree Service, Inc will clear out just enough, but limit this work to ensure we preserve the overall health of the tree.
