Why should I have my trees pruned?
Proper tree pruning offers several benefits. It helps maintain and improve branch structure, addresses structural issues, minimizes potential hazards, allows for closer tree inspection, and enhances overall tree health by removing dead, diseased, or dying branches. Is tree topping healthy for trees?
No, tree topping is not recommended for healthy trees. This practice, also known as heading, tipping, or dehorning, involves removing large portions of a tree's crown. It's considered improper pruning and can be harmful to the tree's health and structure. Is moss a danger to my trees?
Moss generally doesn't pose a threat to trees. As an air plant, it doesn't parasitize trees like mistletoe does. It only becomes problematic if it completely covers the tree's foliage, hindering photosynthesis. In most cases, moss simply attaches to the tree's outer bark without causing harm.Is there something you can do to keep moss growth down?
Managing moss growth isn't typically necessary. Both Spanish and ball moss are native to Florida, and natural processes usually limit their growth on healthy trees. Excessive moss removal efforts may be unnecessary and potentially costly. How do you remove moss?
Regular pruning naturally removes some moss. While it's normal to have Spanish moss in Florida trees, excessive removal isn't recommended. Hand-picking or spraying can be done, but these methods may cause more harm than good to your tree and can be expensive. Will mistletoe kill my tree?
Yes, mistletoe can be fatal to trees if left unchecked. Unlike moss, mistletoe is a parasitic plant that depletes the tree of essential nutrients. Prompt removal is crucial to prevent long-term damage or death of the affected tree. How do you remove a stump?
Our preferred method for stump removal is grinding. We use specialized equipment to grind the stump below grade level, which means it's reduced to a depth below the grass line. This approach is typically the most cost-effective solution.Should tree cuts or wounds be treated or painted?
Current research suggests that it's best to allow tree cuts to heal naturally. While painting or treating wounds was once standard practice, we now understand that a properly made cut on a healthy tree will heal on its own without additional treatment. How often do trees need to be pruned?
For most shade trees, pruning every three years is generally sufficient. However, the ideal pruning frequency can vary depending on the specific tree species and its individual needs. We recommend consulting with us for personalized advice. When is the best time of year to trim my trees?
In many cases, trees can be trimmed year-round. However, certain trees, such as fruit trees and ornamental species, may benefit from pruning at specific times. The optimal timing can depend on factors like the tree's species, health, and growth patterns.Should holes or cavities in my tree be filled?
No. Filling holes or cavities in trees does more harm than good. It creates hidden spaces for moisture, fungus and disease to accumulate and rot the tree from the inside.Should I fertilize my trees?
Yes, the urban environment in Florida is the reason that it is always a good idea to fertilize your trees. Ailing trees or trees in decline may need additional fertilizer applications throughout the year.Do I need a permit to remove my tree?
Not always, but for many trees, the answer is "yes." You can contact your municipality (city or county) to obtain their list of protected trees and size limits. Mid-Florida Tree Service, Inc can help you obtain the required permits when needed. What is a grand tree?
Grand trees, the gold medal winners of their kind, add value to the community and are trees of larger stature. These ancient trees have been granted special protection regarding pruning and removal. They must be reviewed and permitted by the inspectors of your municipality. Hillsborough specifies older oak trees as follows: A Grand Oak is a tree of the genus Quercus with a trunk measuring 34 inches DBH (tree trunk diameter measurement at 4.5 feet above grade) and greater, with a tree condition rating of good or better according to the Tree Condition Evaluation Form, and with trunk circumference, height and crown measurements totaling a minimum of 175 points in accordance to the Tree Point System methodology. What is air spading a tree?
Air spading involves using high-pressure jet sprays to reduce compacted soil beneath a tree. The air spade nozzle is inserted into the soil around the base of the tree, spraying compressed air to loosen the compacted soil. Why would I need to have air spading service performed on my trees?
When an arborist uses an air spade, they are typically removing soil from the base of a tree in order to expose the root system underneath. With the roots exposed the arborist is able to: Prepare for root inspections Remove excess soil Diagnose tree or root issues Prepare for a variety of treatments Excavate deeply planted trees
