Finding pieces of bark beneath a tree can be concerning, but bark shedding is not always a sign of trouble. Some trees naturally shed portions of their outer bark as they grow.
The important distinction is what the shedding leaves behind. Healthy bark underneath points to normal shedding. Bare wood means the tree has lost its protective bark and has been wounded.
Look at the Area Under the Bark
When bark is missing and bare wood is exposed, something has damaged the tree. Storms, lawn equipment, vehicles, animals, insects, and disease are all possible causes.
Our ISA Certified Arborists work with trees throughout Tampa and Central Florida, so we are familiar with the weather, pests, diseases, and growing conditions that affect trees in our area.
The size and location of the wound matter. A small area of damage on a branch is very different from a large section of missing bark on the trunk. Damage that extends around a significant portion of the trunk can interfere with the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients between its roots and canopy.
Check the Rest of the Tree
The condition of the rest of the tree provides important information.
Dead branches, a thinning canopy, cracks, cavities, insect holes, decay, or additional areas of missing bark show that the problem extends beyond normal shedding. Significant damage near the base of the tree deserves particular attention because the lower trunk is critical to the tree's structural support.
For a mature tree near a Tampa home, driveway, street, or other frequently used area, bark loss accompanied by signs of decline or structural damage warrants a professional evaluation.
Don't Treat Bark Loss Before Identifying the Cause
Missing bark is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A pesticide will not repair physical damage, and a fungicide will not solve an insect problem. Routine application of wound dressings is not recommended as a substitute for proper tree care.
The first step is identifying why the bark is coming off and determining the condition of the tree underneath it.
We evaluate damaged and declining trees throughout Tampa and the surrounding Central Florida area. We can inspect the bark loss, evaluate the rest of the tree, and recommend appropriate action based on what we find.
